Some much appreciated variety and very good action on primo grade yellowtail began the day on a successful note. In grease calm seas the surface show was fantastic as the big yellows got with it hammering our baits. Through noon we sat, fished, and caught accumulating an admirable total that satisfied in every way. Switching gears when the yellowtail waned the afternoon yet again revealed an abundance of bluefin that can only be described as stunning. For miles in every direction bluefin were visible crushing acres of “speed bait” (Pacific Sauries) in spectacular crashes and leaps. Once again, though reluctant to bite, the setting and images were indelibly etched in everyone’s memory. What an incredible sight. Nabbing a handful of beauties the effort was certainly worthwhile. Then came nightfall. And the action ground to a halt. Amazing as it seems the pattern of vast amounts of fish disappearing after dark held firm. The standing question remains unanswered, still. It took some time but we finally saved face with a couple of fish well into the next morning. Then we were done.
