Beautiful conditions, few great opportunities, and an admirable effort from our 16 anglers produced a solid score from a fine night of fishing. But for a few exceptions the quarry were 60-100 pound bluefin that showed plenty of grit once on the line. And that of course is the key - once on the line. For those venturing upcoming trips it is past time to update the jigging outfits used to target bluefin offshore both day and night time. The short jigging rods and specialized reels make a HUGE difference specifically when it comes to hooking tuna deep. There is plenty of info on line about these rigs and methods that I highly recommend anglers seeking to improve their results view. "West Coast Jiggerz" is a good start. And there are plenty others. We were introduced to this style of fishing and gear by a highly experienced group of anglers from Thailand fishing for yellowfin tuna down south twelve years past. Turns out that the same set ups are highly effective for these bluefin up here. While the big reels and traditional gear we favor is still fine, the jigging set ups specifically designed for this night time, quick drop, get to the zone fast are superior. They absolutely give the angler an advantage when it comes to getting bites; the first and most crucial part of the equation in any fishery.

Back to current affairs we're on the daytime hunt again encouraged by the sign of bluefin around. Today's image features charter master Steve Tsujiuchi pulling on a nice one on the bow.
